Pere  David  Deer
A semiaquatic animal, the Pere David Deer is native to the subtropics of China and is known in China as "Milu". One of the rarest animals in the world, the unique looking Deer has come back from seven animals in the world, and the brink of extinction, to flourish on exotic game ranches. Their Chinese name is translated as "four unlikes," because it is described as having "the hoofs of a cow but not a cow, the neck of a camel but not a camel, antlers of a deer but not a deer, the tail of a donkey but not a donkey." Male antlers typically grow upward with 2 to 3 main branches growing up and back over the neck. Hindshafts often exhibit "jags", or noticeable points off the tines. Adults have summer coats that are reddish brown with a dark dorsal stripe that grows into a woollier and duller gray winter coat. Adults typically weigh 330-440 lbs, and stand nearly 4 feet at the shoulder.

HUNTING COSTS

Prices are averages taken from researching multiple exotic game ranches in Texas in 2016.

The hunter must research individual ranches for the actual total cost. The ranch may have a special on a specie because they are overstocked; some with damaged antlers/horns or; a specie must be removed from the ranch because they are not compatible with other species. The size of the trophy will change the price of the animal. Some ranches will charge both a hunt fee and a kill fee (replacement fee) so get your questions asked before you book a hunt. Some ranches will provide all handling, gutting, skinning, shipping prep or delivery to the taxidermy as part of the hunt "package." Some will charge for each item separately.

Meals and lodging may be provided as part of the package, or it will be an add on. Some will provide free lodging IF you take an animal. Again, check with the ranch BEFORE you book. If you fly to a ranch some will meet you at the airport as part of the package, some will charge you to pick you up. Ranches make their profit from repeat customers so, as a rule, they will go out of their way to please their hunters and try their utmost to get the animal the hunter is looking for. However, as in all industries, there will be the rare exceptions, but don't let one bad experience reflect on all ranches or outfitters.

Once you have decided on a ranch, read every single word on their web site. THEN CALL THEM before you book. Hope this help you toward your trophy goal!
